For many people living with spinal cord injury (SCI), this is reality. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common and debilitating complications of paralysis. Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research (SMSR) have been funding research into UTIs and ways to reduce and treat them. For Adam, this research really did give him the gift of life! Adam was involved in a motorbike accident at the age of 17, which resulted in him sustaining a spinal cord injury. Since then, he has suffered from recurrent UTIs. Initially, doctors had a choice of multiple antibiotics available; however, as time went on, Adams' body started to become resistant to treatment. The infections were becoming more and more debilitating. He said: “I was petrified of what would be next.” Then 5 years ago Adam heard about a new research project with a pre-trial at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. This research was being funded by SMSR with the aim of allowing people with SCI to self-administer an antibiotic treatment at home. For Adam, this was his final chance. Incredibly, he saw a change within days and for the first time in years his urine ran clear! He says: “This sort of funding gives me hope for the future! What Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research did gave me my life back!” Please support our Christmas Appeal and donate today to fund more of this life-giving research! Manage Cookie Preferences
