NeuroMAP: Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to uncover potential areas for recovery after an SCI

Can a patient recover any movement or sensation after a catastrophic accident or trauma that has damaged their spinal cord? This project uses Neuronavigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to scan the brain shortly after injury and identify nerve pathways that may still be partially intact. By recognising the potential for recovery, clinicians can tailor rehabilitation to maximise improved function, in this case, in the upper limb.

SMSR has provided funding to upgrade the TMS equipment in the NeuroLab at Stoke Mandeville, in support of this study.

The first phase of patient recruitment to the study is almost complete. Patients will be followed up over the next 12 months to review their progress.
