William Harding School started its Autumn term off in style by hosting a special disability awareness assembly on Monday 30th September, with Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Alan Sherwell, in attendance.

As part of the assembly, pupils at the school were invited to listen to an insightful talk by Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research (SMSR) Ambassador, Kat Panagaki, herself a wheelchair-user, as she shared some of her own life experiences of what life is really like living with spinal cord injury and the daily challenges faced.

The pupils were fantastic listeners and were able to ask Kat questions about everything from how she brushed her teeth, to what it's like to travel in an aeroplane!

Commenting on the awareness event, Derek Cutler, SMSR Research Manager, said: "On behalf of Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research, we'd like to say thank you to the school team for inviting us along today, to our fantastic Ambassador Kat, and to the Mayor of Aylesbury for kindly giving up his time and support."

A William Harding School spokesperson said: “Thank you to the team for visiting William Harding School. The children really enjoyed the assembly and all of the information provided. They really enjoyed listening to Kat who was able to provide them with real life experiences relating to spinal injuries. One of our most important values is inclusion and we were very proud to be able to support this charity.”

Pupils are now looking forward to spending the next couple of weeks taking it in turns to experience what it's like to be a wheelchair user in our Wheels at Work initiative, and are also planning some brilliant fundraising activities to further support the charity.
